Steroids are used in sports, bodybuilding and the fitness world. There are different types of steroids, but sports steroids are mostly anabolic steroids that are synthetic drugs but similar to testosterone, the male sex hormone. Athletes and body builders use steroids to improve their athletic performance and to build more lean muscle tissue.
Doctors prescribe anabolic steroids in some cases where the body has lost a muscle tissue, such as in some serious illnesses that cause muscle wasting, or in cases where the body does not produce enough testosterone. Body builders usually buy steroids at gyms, online or through personal contacts. Steroids usually show in drug tests, but new steroids are created all the time that are not detected in tests.
Steroids are used for better performance, to be able to train longer without taking breaks and to build more muscle mass. Steroids can be taken as injections or as tablets and pills. When athletes use steroids, they often use the “cycling” method which means taking steroids for weeks or months followed by a break from steroids. Often cycling is combined with the pyramiding method, which means that the user starts with a low dose of steroids and increases the dose until the middle of the cycle, and then cuts down until the dose is very low again at the end of the cycle.
Commonly used sports steroids include Andro (Androstenedione) that is often used by athletes to improve sports performance and Primobolan (Methenolone) that has been popular in the baseball world and is used to build up strength without building a lot of muscle mass. Clenbuterol is a popular choice for many body builders who want to increase lean muscle mass. THG or Tetrahydrogestrinone has been more difficult to detect in doping tests, which has made it popular with competing athletes. DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a prohormone that is more widely available than many steroids and is easier to buy.
Other popular steroids include Anadrol, Winstrol, Oxandrin, Dianabol and Deca-Durabolin. Many sportsmen and women also combine different types of steroids. This method is called stacking.
The most common side effects of steroid use include sexual problems, impotence, the growth of body hair in women and men, infertility, menstrual problems in women, breast development in men, and severe acne. Even more serious side effects include heart problems and the risk of heart attack, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, liver or kidney failure and mood swings, irritability and aggression.
